Why does the straight-line number look so different from the road number?
A straight line of 3.6 miles to UT becomes 5.0 miles by road, and 4.2 miles to Downtown becomes 5.4 miles. Roads bend around rail lines, creeks and highways, so the road is longer than the line. The gap is about 1.4 miles to UT and 1.2 miles to Downtown.
When a listing says “close to UT” or “close to Downtown,” ask which basis it used. Our figures use the Census address point for Centro and a street address for each destination. Peak traffic on I-35 can add time that our estimates leave out. The ACC Highland page explains the same effect for a closer trip: apartments near ACC Highland.
How do I decide if the commute works?
Test the drive and the bus at the hours you would travel, and compare both with the price gap. The studio apartment costs guide helps you add up the full monthly cost. If you want a shorter trip, look at ACC Highland or Hyde Park.
