Can you get around Highland without a car?
Some trips work well without a car, and some take much longer. From Centro Studio Homes at 824 Camino La Costa, bus stops, the Red Line and mapped bike lanes are all within about a mile. The table at the end of this section shows each option, with its basis.
Centro’s own site says residents can “bike or walk to the train station,” and it lists bike storage and Echelon bikes among its community amenities. Read that as a pointer, not a promise. The measured walk to Highland Station is about 1.3 miles. A car-light lifestyle is a choice you test trip by trip, and the Highland commute table helps you test it.
| Mode | What we found | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Bus | Stops 341 to 501 m away | Straight line, OpenStreetMap stop points |

Which bus stops are near Camino La Costa?
The closest stops are on Camino La Costa and on St Johns, between 286 and 501 meters from the address in a straight line. The two Camino La Costa/La Posada stops, numbered 1016 and 1017, are 341 and 501 meters away. Google’s walking steps to the first stop add up to about 0.3 miles and about 7 minutes.
Google Maps transit data on 2026-11-02 showed route 337 boarding at both Camino La Costa/La Posada stops. It also showed route 300 boarding at the “900 St Johns/Bennett” and “801 St Johns/Bennett” stops, 406 and 432 meters away. Stops on Roland Johnson near Huntland sit 286 and 299 meters away, and we did not read which routes use them. Stop and route lists change with each CapMetro schedule, so use the trip planner for the day you ride.
Which bus routes reach Highland Station and ACC Highland?
Four routes list both ACC Highland and Highland Station as destinations: 7 Duval/Dove Springs, 324 Georgian/Ohlen, 337 Koenig/Colony Park and 350 Airport Blvd. This comes from CapMetro schedule documents effective August 16, 2026 to January 9, 2027. Wikipedia’s Highland Station page lists the same four routes.
| Route | Schedule label | What the schedule lists |
|---|---|---|
| 7 Duval/Dove Springs | High-frequency route | ACC Highland, Highland Station, Waterloo Park |
| 324 Georgian/Ohlen | Local | El Rancho Supermercado, Target, ACC Highland, Highland Station |
| 337 Koenig/Colony Park | Weekday high-frequency route | ACC Highland, Highland Station, JD’s Supermarket |
| 350 Airport Blvd | Not labeled in our capture | IDEA Montopolis, Allison Elementary School, ACC Highland, Highland Station |
Route 7 “begins near Crestview Station” and “serves Hyde Park & campus up north,” per CapMetro. In June 2026, CapMetro said route 337 would extend to the Expo Center Park & Ride. We did not verify which of these four routes stops within walking distance of Centro, other than the 337 stops above. Ask CapMetro’s planner for your exact start point. See apartments near Hyde Park for the route 7 story.
How do you reach Highland Station on the Red Line?
Highland Station is 0.70 miles from Centro in a straight line, about 1.3 miles on foot, and about 1.2 miles by road. It sits at Airport Boulevard and Highland Mall Boulevard, “directly across the street from Highland Mall,” according to Wikipedia. CapMetro calls the Red Line route 550 and says it has 10 stations from Downtown to Leander, including Highland (ACC).
You have three ways to reach the platform. Walk the 1.3 miles in 28 to 33 minutes by Google Maps data. Ride a bus that lists Highland Station as a destination. Or bike the OpenStreetMap-mapped cycleways toward Airport Boulevard. We did not measure the bike time to the station, and we did not read the Red Line frequency from the route 550 timetable. Confirm both on the Metrorail Red Line glossary entry and on the CapMetro timetable. Use the Highland Station entry for a short definition.
What about Crestview Station?
Crestview Station is 1.10 miles from Centro in a straight line, measured to its OpenStreetMap point. Wikipedia says it sits at North Lamar and Airport Boulevard, and that it opened in 2010. Google Maps transit data showed route 300 from “900 St Johns/Bennett” to the “Crestview Station Bus Stop” as a 6 minute ride on 2026-11-02.
Route 7 also begins near Crestview Station. That gives you two ways to reach Crestview Station without driving: a bus or the Red Line from Highland Station. See apartments near Crestview for what is around the station.
Where can you ride a bike near Centro?
OpenStreetMap tags Camino La Costa with a bike lane, E St Johns Ave and Cameron Rd with cycle tracks, and Airport Blvd with a track, a lane or a separate cycleway in places. The Red Line Trail is mapped as concrete cycleway segments near Highland and Crestview stations. OpenStreetMap can lag the street, so ride the route in daylight before you rely on a protected lane.
Google Maps data from 2026-11-02 gave 3.9 to 4.9 miles and 20 to 25 minutes by bike to the UT campus, by way of Camino La Costa and Duval St or Red River St. Centro lists bike storage and Echelon bikes among its amenities. See the bike storage glossary entry, and ask the leasing office how storage works.
How long does it take to drive instead?
Driving is faster on paper for most trips, but all the figures here are free-flow estimates. OSRM routing, with no live traffic, gives about 3 minutes to ACC Highland and Highland Station, 6 minutes to Mueller, 11 minutes to UT or The Domain, and 9 minutes to Downtown. Peak traffic on I-35 will add time.
The Austin-Bergstrom airport figures differ by source. OSRM gives 12.8 miles and 16 minutes. Apartments.com gives 16.7 miles and 26 minutes. We show both in the Highland commute table. Centro lists reserved parking as available but does not publish a price.
What changed in CapMetro service in 2026?
CapMetro changed several routes in June 2026, and the schedules we read run August 16, 2026 to January 9, 2027. Route 337 was extended to the Expo Center Park & Ride. The Route 20 service north of UT became a new local route, Route 320 Manor Rd/Dean Keeton, running every 30 minutes as underlying service for Rapid 837.
Route changes matter because a route you read about last year may not exist in the same form. We do not claim that any MetroRapid line serves Highland, because we did not read that in any source. Always rebuild your trip in the CapMetro trip planner for the week you move in, and do it again every time CapMetro publishes a new schedule.
How do you test a car-free week before you commit?
Test one real week of trips on paper, then on the ground. The plan below uses only numbers you can check. Write your own trips in the first column and fill in the rest from the commute table and the planner.
| Step | What to do | What to write down |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | List the five trips you make most often | Place, day, arrival time |
| 2 | Find each place in the commute table | Straight line, road distance, any walk, bike or transit figure |
| 3 | Run each trip in the CapMetro trip planner | Route number, stop, wait, transfers |
| 4 | Walk to the nearest stop | Minutes from the door |
| 5 | Mark the trips with no measured transit time | These are drive or rideshare trips |
Our car-free commute guide walks through the same steps with examples.
What are the limits of going without a car here?
Some trips are long, and some have no measured transit time. Transit to UT takes 48 to 56 minutes in the evening data we have, compared with about 11 minutes by a free-flow drive estimate. We have no measured transit time to Mueller, The Domain or Austin-Bergstrom airport. Walking to Highland Station takes 28 to 33 minutes, so a bus or bike will suit that leg for most days.
Be honest with yourself about trips you make at night, with heavy bags or in summer heat. Centro lists reserved parking as available, and some residents mix modes. Our pillar page on the apartment community lists every amenity, including bike storage.
