# Screening

The checks a property runs on an application, usually income, credit and rental history, before it approves a lease.

Screening is how a property checks an applicant. Common checks cover income, credit and rental history. Each property sets its own standards.

In Austin, income checks often use paystubs. Austin Apartment Locators says “most Austin properties accept two recent paystubs.” Self-employed applicants may need other proof.

## Why it matters before you apply
