# How to Zone a Studio Apartment: Sleep, Work, Eat, Relax

Zone a studio by giving each daily job its own spot: sleep, work, eat and relax. Use furniture backs, rugs and shelves as walls. Keep the bed away from the kitchen and the desk near a window. Measure your own unit on a tour before you buy.

## How do you zone a studio apartment?

Zone a studio by giving each daily job a spot in the one main room: sleep, work, eat and relax. Mark each spot with a rug, a shelf, a lamp or the back of a sofa. Keep paths clear between zones so the room still feels open.

A studio at Centro Studio Homes has one main living area, a full kitchen and one bathroom. The floor plans list 0 bedrooms and 1 bath. That shape drives the whole plan, because the sleeping area and the living area share space.

Square footage is not published on this site, so measure your unit on a tour. See [studio apartment](https://centro.multisites.ai/glossary/studio-apartment) and [floor plan](https://centro.multisites.ai/glossary/floor-plan) in our glossary if the terms are new.

## Where should the bed go in a studio?

Put the bed on the wall that is farthest from the front door and the kitchen. That gives the sleeping area the most separation from daily traffic. If a window is on that wall, keep the bed clear of the glass so you can open it.

Three simple options:

1. **Along a wall.** This leaves the most floor open.
2. **In a corner.** This makes a nook and fits a rug and a small shelf.
3. **Behind a divider.** Use a bookcase or a curtain on a ceiling-mounted rod if the lease allows it. Ask the office about wall and ceiling rules first.

## How do you fit a desk or workspace?

Place the desk near a window and away from the bed. Centro lists natural light as a feature of the homes. Face the desk to the side of the window instead of straight at it to cut glare on your screen.

If you work from home, a shared desk and dining table can save space. Centro also lists a CoWork space as a community amenity. See the [amenities page](https://centro.multisites.ai/amenities) and the [cowork space](https://centro.multisites.ai/glossary/cowork-space) glossary entry.

## How do you separate the kitchen from the rest of the room?

Use a rug and a bar-height shelf or console to mark the eating zone next to the kitchen. The homes have a full kitchen with quartz counters. Keep the walkway clear so you can open the fridge and cabinets without bumping furniture.

## What furniture works best in one room?

Furniture that does two jobs works best. A bed with drawers, a bench with storage, a drop-leaf table and a bookcase that doubles as a divider all earn their space. Scale matters more than style.

1. Pick the largest piece first, usually the bed or sofa.
2. Place it, then tape the other pieces on the floor with painter’s tape.
3. Walk through the room. If you bump anything, shrink the piece.
4. Go vertical with shelves and wall hooks, once you confirm what the lease allows.

The hardwood-style floors suit area rugs, which are the cheapest way to draw a zone. Read the full [studio layout and storage guide](https://centro.multisites.ai/guides/studio-layout-and-storage) for storage ideas.

## What should I measure before I buy?

Measure before you buy anything. Centro does not publish the studio square footage here, so a tape measure on your tour is the best source. Check what the floor plan shows on the [floor plans page](https://centro.multisites.ai/floorplans) and take photos.

Measure these five things:

1. The longest uninterrupted wall
2. The width of the main room
3. Window and door locations, and how the door swings
4. The kitchen walkway
5. The elevator or stairs, so the furniture can get in

Our [tour checklist](https://centro.multisites.ai/guides/apartment-tour-checklist) lists more. Not sure if a studio is the right size? Compare [studio vs. one-bedroom](https://centro.multisites.ai/compare/studio-vs-one-bedroom-austin).

## How do you keep a studio feeling open?

Keep the middle of the room clear and put big pieces on the walls. Use light colors, a mirror across from a window and low furniture to keep sight lines open. Too many small pieces make a room feel crowded.

A few habits help:

- **Match your lighting to your zones.** Use a lamp by the bed, a task lamp at the desk and an overhead light for the main room.
- **Limit your rugs.** Two or three rugs mark zones. Five make the floor busy.
- **Hide clutter.** Closed storage looks calmer than open shelves. Ask the office before you assume closet details, since we do not publish them.
- **Use the walls.** Hooks and shelves free the floor, once you check what the lease allows.

## What if you work from home and sleep in the same room?

Make a clear end to the workday. Close the laptop, put it in a drawer or a bag, and turn off the desk lamp. That small habit tells your brain the work zone is closed.

If you want a break from the room, Centro lists a CoWork space and a fitness center as community amenities. A change of space can help you focus. See the [amenities page](https://centro.multisites.ai/amenities) and the [fitness center](https://centro.multisites.ai/glossary/fitness-center) glossary entry.

## How does a first-floor or second-floor choice matter?

Centro has two studio floor plans: a 1st floor studio and a 2nd floor studio, both with 0 beds and 1 bath. Rents differ by floor and unit. The layout and window position can differ by unit, so look at the one you may rent.

Compare each plan on its page: [1st floor studio](https://centro.multisites.ai/floorplans/centro-studio-home---1st-floor) and [2nd floor studio](https://centro.multisites.ai/floorplans/centro-studio-home---2nd-floor). Use the [photo gallery](https://centro.multisites.ai/photogallery) to study where the windows and kitchen sit.

## Questions renters ask

What does zoning a studio mean?

Zoning means giving each daily job a defined spot in one room. Sleep, work, eat and relax each get an area. You mark the areas with rugs, shelves, lighting and furniture placement instead of walls.

Do I need a room divider?

No. A bookcase with an open back, a sofa with its back to the bed area, or a tall plant can split a room. A divider helps if you want more privacy. Choose one that does not block natural light.

How big is a Centro studio?

Centro does not publish studio square footage on this site. Measure the unit on your tour and ask the office for the floor plan before you buy furniture.

What should I measure on a tour?

Measure the longest open wall, the window locations, the kitchen walkway and the door swing. Take photos. A tape measure and your phone are enough.
